Key Scriptures
What Is the Gospel?
The word gospel simply means "good news."
But what makes it good news?
The gospel is the good news that God saves sinners through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
At the center of Christianity is not a set of rules, a religious system, or a moral improvement program. At the center of Christianity is a message—good news about what God has done through His Son to rescue sinners and bring them into a relationship with Himself.
The apostle Paul summarized the gospel this way:
"For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures."
— 1 Corinthians 15:3-4
The gospel answers four important questions:
- What is our problem?
- What has God done about it?
- How should we respond?
- What does God promise to those who believe?
The Problem: Sin
The Bible teaches that every person has sinned against God.
"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
— Romans 3:23
Sin is more than breaking rules.
Sin is rebellion against God.
It includes our actions, words, motives, desires, pride, selfishness, and refusal to submit to God's authority.
Because God is perfectly holy, righteous, and just, sin cannot simply be ignored.
Every person stands accountable before God.
The Bible says:
"For the wages of sin is death."
— Romans 6:23
The word wages refers to what is earned.
The consequence of sin is death—both physical death and eternal separation from God under His righteous judgment.
This is humanity's greatest problem.
Not politics.
Not economics.
Not education.
Our greatest problem is that we are sinners separated from a holy God.
God's Solution
If the gospel stopped there, there would be no hope.
But God did not leave humanity in its sin.
Because of His great love, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, into the world to save sinners.
Jesus lived the perfect life that we could never live.
He obeyed God completely.
He never sinned.
Then He willingly went to the cross and died in the place of sinners.
The Bible says:
"But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
— Romans 5:8
Jesus was not merely a victim of injustice.
He came to die.
He willingly offered Himself as a sacrifice for sin.
On the cross, Jesus took upon Himself the judgment that sinners deserve so that those who trust Him could be forgiven.
Three days later, He rose from the dead.
His resurrection demonstrated His victory over sin, death, and the grave and confirmed that His sacrifice was accepted by God.
Why Did Jesus Have to Die?
Many people ask why Jesus had to die.
The answer is found in God's holiness and justice.
Because God is perfectly righteous, sin must be judged.
Justice requires a penalty.
Yet because God is also loving and merciful, He provided a substitute.
Jesus Christ willingly took our place.
The apostle Paul wrote:
"For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God."
— 2 Corinthians 5:21
This is one of the greatest truths in Scripture.
Jesus took our guilt.
We receive His righteousness.
He bore our punishment.
We receive His forgiveness.
This is why the cross stands at the center of the Christian faith.
Salvation Is a Gift
Many people assume that Christianity teaches salvation by good works.
The Bible teaches the opposite.
Salvation cannot be earned.
No amount of good deeds, religious rituals, church attendance, charity, or personal effort can remove our sin or make us right with God.
The Bible says:
"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."
— Ephesians 2:8-9
Grace means receiving something we do not deserve.
Salvation is God's gift.
A gift cannot be earned.
It can only be received.
How Should We Respond?
The gospel calls every person to respond.
The Bible repeatedly calls people to:
Repent
Repentance means turning from sin and turning toward God.
It is a change of mind and heart that results in a new direction.
"Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out."
— Acts 3:19
Repentance is not earning salvation.
It is the proper response of a heart that recognizes its need for God's mercy.
Believe
Faith means trusting in Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord.
It means relying on what He accomplished through His death and resurrection rather than relying on yourself.
"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life."
— John 3:16
Biblical faith is more than intellectual agreement.
It is personal trust in Jesus Christ.
Follow Christ
Those who truly trust Christ begin following Him.
Jesus is not merely a Savior to admire.
He is a Lord to obey.
Jesus said:
"If you love Me, you will keep My commandments."
— John 14:15
Good works do not save us.
But a transformed life is evidence that God is at work within us.
How Do I Know God Will Receive Me?
Many people wonder whether God could really forgive them.
Perhaps you feel too sinful.
Too broken.
Too far gone.
The Bible offers tremendous hope.
Jesus said:
"Whoever comes to Me I will never cast out."
— John 6:37
And Scripture promises:
"Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
— Romans 10:13
God does not reject repentant sinners who come to Him through Jesus Christ.
His invitation remains open today.
A Final Question
Have you responded to the gospel?
Not merely understood it.
Not merely admired it.
Not merely agreed with it.
Have you repented of your sins and placed your faith in Jesus Christ?
The gospel is not simply information to be learned.
It is good news to be believed.
And it is God's power to save all who trust in His Son.

If you desire to trust Christ today, speak honestly to God.
Confess your sin.
Turn to Him in repentance.
Place your faith in Jesus Christ.
Ask Him to forgive you and save you.
God hears those who come to Him through His Son.
