Assurance of Salvation
One of the most common questions new believers ask is:
"How can I know that I am truly saved?"
Perhaps you have trusted in Jesus Christ, but still struggle with doubts.
Maybe you wonder whether your faith is genuine.
Maybe you fear that your sins are too great.
Maybe you worry that you have not done enough.
The good news is that God does not want His children living in constant uncertainty.
The Bible teaches that believers can have assurance of salvation.
Not because they are perfect.
Not because they never struggle.
But because God keeps His promises.
Can We Really Know?
Many people believe no one can know whether they are saved.
The apostle John disagreed.
He wrote:
"I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life."
— 1 John 5:13
Notice that John does not say:
"hope"
or
"guess"
or
"wonder."
He says:
"know."
God wants believers to have confidence in Christ.
Assurance Begins With God's Promise
Our assurance is not rooted in our feelings.
Feelings change.
Some days we feel close to God.
Other days we do not.
Some days we feel confident.
Other days we struggle with doubt.
If assurance depended upon our emotions, it would constantly rise and fall.
Instead, assurance begins with God's promises.
Jesus said:
"Whoever comes to Me I will never cast out."
— John 6:37
If you have genuinely come to Christ in repentance and faith, His promise applies to you.
Jesus does not reject those who come to Him.
Assurance Depends on Christ's Work
Our confidence is not based on our performance.
It is based on Christ's finished work.
Jesus lived the perfect life we could not live.
He died for our sins.
He rose from the dead.
He accomplished everything necessary for salvation.
When He cried:
"It is finished."
— John 19:30
He meant it.
Your salvation depends on Christ's work, not your ability to earn God's favor.
The question is not:
"Have I done enough?"
The question is:
"Is Jesus enough?"
The answer is yes.
What About Ongoing Sin?
Many Christians become discouraged because they continue to struggle with sin.
They think:
"If I were truly saved, I wouldn't struggle like this."
But the presence of spiritual struggle is often evidence of spiritual life.
Before conversion, people typically make peace with sin.
After conversion, they begin fighting against it.
Christians still sin.
But their relationship to sin changes.
They grieve over it.
They confess it.
They seek God's help to overcome it.
The struggle itself often reveals that God is at work.
Evidence of Genuine Faith
The Bible encourages believers to examine themselves.
"Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith."
— 2 Corinthians 13:5
While good works do not save us, genuine faith produces evidence.
Some signs of spiritual life include:
Love for Christ
Do you genuinely desire to know and follow Jesus?
Love for God's Word
Do you hunger to learn what God has said?
Love for Other Believers
Do you care about God's people?
Conviction of Sin
Do you feel sorrow when you disobey God?
Desire for Obedience
Do you want to please Him?
None of these are perfect.
But they are evidence of God's work.
The Witness of the Holy Spirit
The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit gives assurance to believers.
Paul wrote:
"The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God."
— Romans 8:16
This does not usually happen through an audible voice.
Rather, the Spirit produces confidence in God's promises and confirms God's work in our lives.
As believers grow, they increasingly recognize God's presence and activity within them.
Can a Christian Lose Salvation?
Different Christians have debated aspects of this question.
What all believers should remember is this:
Our confidence rests in God's faithfulness.
Jesus said:
"My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of My hand."
— John 10:27-28
The believer's hope ultimately rests not in their grip on Christ, but in Christ's grip on them.
God is faithful.
Christ is sufficient.
The Holy Spirit preserves His people.
What Should I Do When Doubts Come?
Even mature Christians experience seasons of doubt.
When doubts arise:
Return to the Gospel
Remember what Christ has done.
Trust God's Promises
Focus on Scripture rather than emotions.
Pray Honestly
Bring your fears to God.
Stay Connected to a Church
God often strengthens assurance through fellowship and encouragement.
Keep Following Jesus
Growth often produces confidence over time.
Do not wait until you feel perfect.
Keep walking with Christ.
A Final Question
Where is your confidence?
In your performance?
In your emotions?
In your religious activities?
Or in Jesus Christ?
The strongest foundation for assurance is not looking inward.
It is looking upward.
The more we understand Christ, His promises, and His finished work, the more confidence we have in Him.
If You Are Still Unsure
If you have never truly repented of your sins and trusted in Jesus Christ, assurance is not found by convincing yourself.
It is found by coming to Christ.
Jesus welcomes sinners.
He forgives sinners.
He saves sinners.
Come to Him today.
