How to Pray

If you are new to Christianity, prayer may feel intimidating.

You may wonder:

"Am I saying the right words?"
"Do I need a special formula?"
"What if I don't know what to pray?"

The good news is that prayer is much simpler than many people think.

Prayer is talking with God.

It is one of the greatest privileges believers have.

Through Jesus Christ, we are welcomed into a relationship with God and invited to approach Him as our Heavenly Father.

Prayer is not about impressing God with eloquent words.

It is about communicating with Him honestly, humbly, and regularly.

What Is Prayer?

Prayer is communicating with God.

It includes:

  • Worship
  • Praise
  • Thanksgiving
  • Confession
  • Requests
  • Dependence
  • Fellowship

Prayer is not merely asking God for things.

It is part of an ongoing relationship with Him.

Just as healthy relationships require communication, a healthy relationship with God involves prayer.

Why Should Christians Pray?

The Bible gives many reasons to pray.

Because God Commands It

Scripture repeatedly calls believers to pray.

"Pray without ceasing."
— 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Prayer is not optional for the Christian life.

It is one of God's primary means of fellowship with His people.

Because Prayer Deepens Our Relationship With God

Prayer helps us know God better.

As we spend time with Him, our trust, love, and dependence grow.

Because God Hears His Children

The Bible promises:

"The Lord is near to all who call on Him."
— Psalm 145:18

God is not distant.

He listens to His people.

How Did Jesus Teach Us to Pray?

One day Jesus' disciples asked Him how to pray.

Jesus responded with what is commonly called the Lord's Prayer.

"Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil."
— Matthew 6:9-13

Jesus was not merely giving words to repeat.

He was providing a pattern.

This prayer teaches us to focus on:

  • God's glory
  • God's kingdom
  • God's will
  • Daily needs
  • Forgiveness
  • Spiritual protection

Prayer begins with God, not ourselves.

What Should I Pray About?

The simple answer is:

Everything.

Paul wrote:

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God."
— Philippians 4:6

God cares about every part of your life.

You can pray about:

  • Family
  • Work
  • School
  • Health
  • Temptation
  • Decisions
  • Finances
  • Relationships
  • Ministry
  • Spiritual growth

Nothing is too big.

Nothing is too small.

Bring everything to God.

A Simple Prayer Pattern

Many Christians find it helpful to remember the acronym:

ACTS

#### A — Adoration

Praise God for who He is.

Thank Him for His character, goodness, power, wisdom, mercy, and love.

#### C — Confession

Honestly acknowledge your sins before God.

Ask for forgiveness and cleansing.

#### T — Thanksgiving

Thank God for His blessings, provision, salvation, and faithfulness.

#### S — Supplication

Bring your requests before Him.

Pray for yourself and others.

This simple pattern can help provide balance in your prayer life.

What If I Don't Know What to Say?

Many believers struggle with this.

Remember:

God is your Father.

You do not need impressive words.

Speak honestly.

Speak naturally.

Speak from your heart.

Prayer is not a performance.

God already knows your thoughts, fears, struggles, and needs.

He invites you to bring them to Him.

What About Unanswered Prayer?

Every Christian eventually encounters prayers that seem unanswered.

Sometimes God says:

Yes

He grants the request.

No

He lovingly denies the request.

Wait

He answers in His timing rather than ours.

Because God is wise, loving, and sovereign, we can trust Him even when we do not understand His answers.

Prayer is not about getting our will done in heaven.

It is about learning to trust God's will on earth.

Does God Hear Imperfect Prayers?

Absolutely.

God does not hear us because our prayers are perfect.

He hears us because of Jesus Christ.

In fact, the Bible says:

"The Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words."
— Romans 8:26

Even when we struggle to find words, God understands.

He welcomes His children.

How Can I Develop a Consistent Prayer Life?

Start small.

Do not focus on praying perfectly.

Focus on praying regularly.

Consider:

  • Setting aside a specific time each day.
  • Praying while reading Scripture.
  • Keeping a prayer journal.
  • Praying for others.
  • Praying throughout the day.

Consistency is more important than length.

A daily habit of prayer will strengthen your relationship with God over time.

A Final Question

Are you talking with God?

Many Christians desire closeness with God while neglecting one of the primary ways He has given to know Him.

Prayer is not reserved for pastors, missionaries, or spiritual experts.

It is a privilege available to every believer.

God invites you to come.

God invites you to ask.

God invites you to trust Him.

And God delights in hearing His children pray.
