What Is the Trinity?

Christians confess one God.

They also confess that the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God.

The Father is not the Son. The Son is not the Spirit. The Spirit is not the Father.

This is the doctrine of the Trinity:

The one eternal God exists as three distinct persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—each fully divine and sharing one undivided divine being.

The Trinity is not a mathematical contradiction. Christianity does not say God is one person and three persons in the same respect. God is one in being and three in person.

The Unity of God

The Bible clearly teaches monotheism.

“The Lord is one.”

There is one Creator, one ultimate object of worship, and one divine being.

The Trinity does not add three gods to monotheism.

The Father, Son, and Spirit do not form a committee of separate divine beings.

They possess the same indivisible divine essence.

The Father Is God

The Father is repeatedly identified as God.

Jesus prays to the Father, speaks of the Father’s love, and teaches His disciples to address God as Father.

The Father sends the Son and the Spirit.

His fatherhood is eternal within the Trinity and becomes the basis for believers’ adoption through Christ.

The Son Is God

The New Testament identifies Jesus as the eternal Word who was with God and was God.

All things were created through Him.

He receives worship, forgives sins, exercises divine authority, and shares the Father’s glory.

At the incarnation, the eternal Son assumes a full human nature without ceasing to be God.

Jesus is not a created lesser deity.

The Holy Spirit Is God

The Holy Spirit possesses divine attributes and performs divine works.

He creates, gives life, searches the depths of God, inspires Scripture, indwells believers, distributes gifts, and sanctifies.

He can be grieved and spoken against.

The Spirit is not an impersonal energy or force.

He is a divine person.

Three Distinct Persons

The persons are not merely three names for one person.

At Jesus’ baptism:

• the Son stands in the water
• the Spirit descends
• the Father speaks

All three are present distinctly.

Jesus prays to the Father and promises that the Father will send another Helper, the Spirit.

The relationships are real, not theatrical appearances.

One Being, Three Persons

God’s oneness and threeness refer to different aspects.

• One being answers: What is God?
• Three persons answers: Who is God?

Human beings are one being and one person.

God’s mode of existence is unique.

The doctrine describes what Scripture reveals without claiming to explain the infinite divine life exhaustively.

Eternal Trinity

The Father, Son, and Spirit have always existed.

The Son did not become divine.

The Spirit was not created later.

The persons’ relationships are eternal.

Christianity therefore rejects any view in which the Father first exists alone and later produces lesser divine beings.

Equality and Roles

The persons are equal in divine nature.

They may perform distinct roles in creation and redemption.

The Father sends. The Son becomes incarnate and accomplishes redemption. The Spirit applies Christ’s work and indwells believers.

Functional distinction does not imply inferiority of being.

The Son’s obedient mission does not make Him less divine.

Common Errors

Modalism

God is said to be one person appearing in different modes—sometimes Father, sometimes Son, sometimes Spirit.

This denies the real distinction of persons.

Tritheism

Father, Son, and Spirit are treated as three separate gods.

This denies divine unity.

Arianism

The Son is viewed as the highest created being rather than eternal God.

This denies His full deity.

Partialism

Each person is treated as one-third of God.

Each person is fully God, not a fragment.

Analogies Help and Mislead

Christians have compared the Trinity to water, an egg, the sun, a three-leaf clover, human relationships, or the mind.

Every analogy eventually fails.

Water changing between solid, liquid, and gas suggests modalism.

An egg divides God into parts.

Three human persons suggest three beings.

Analogies may illustrate one limited aspect, but none can explain God adequately.

Use them cautiously.

Is the Word “Trinity” in the Bible?

The word itself is not biblical.

The doctrine is a systematic summary of biblical teaching.

Other theological words—such as incarnation—also summarize scriptural truths.

The question is not whether a later term appears in the text, but whether it accurately expresses the whole biblical witness.

The Trinity and Salvation

Salvation is Trinitarian.

The Father chooses and sends. The Son becomes human, dies, and rises. The Spirit gives life, unites believers to Christ, and seals them.

Christians are brought to the Father, through the Son, by the Spirit.

Removing any person distorts the Gospel.

The Trinity and Love

God did not begin loving after creation.

The Father eternally loves the Son in the fellowship of the Spirit.

Love belongs to God’s eternal life.

Creation does not fill a deficiency in God.

It flows from divine generosity.

The Trinity and Prayer

Christian prayer is ordinarily directed to the Father, through the Son, in the Holy Spirit.

Believers may also address Jesus and acknowledge the Spirit as God.

Trinitarian prayer recognizes that access to God is a gift of God.

The Trinity and Christian Unity

Jesus prays that His people may be one.

The church cannot reproduce God’s unity, but the Trinity provides the ultimate foundation for unity without erasing distinction.

Christian unity should not require sameness.

Different people and gifts can share one life and mission under God.

Mystery Without Contradiction

The Trinity is mysterious because God exceeds human comprehension.

Mystery is not irrationality.

Christians are not claiming that three equals one in the same sense.

They are receiving a reality revealed by God that no created analogy can contain.

The doctrine protects the identity of the God who saves.

The Father is God. The Son is God. The Holy Spirit is God. There is one God.

Christian worship is therefore communion with the triune God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
